Two days after the Colombian army rescued the 15 kidnapped by the FARC (the Revolutionary Army Forces of Colombia) leftist guerrilla, I went for a walk in downtown Medellin, the city where I was born.

A women with ragged shirt, no shoes, dirty and her hair all messed approached me.

The curious case of the lone parking meter

The Alestle, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, IL

Lately there has been a lot of construction and renovation going on in Cougar Village, but recently there was an addition that might be a bit unnecessary.

As I was parking near my 510 apartment, I noticed that in front of one of the parking spots closest to the sidewalk had a hole in the cement that had been filled in front of it.

Crude comments create chaos

Western Courier, Western Illinois University, IL

3 hours ago by Ed Komenda

A recent television recording showing Jesse Jackson making obscene comments in regard to democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has created much controversy. Jackson's words, ironically, were not as clear-cut as he anticipated, though. The reverend, in a statement pointed at Obama, said that he wanted to "cut his nuts off.

When a female reporter from the Los Angeles Times asked Sen. John McCain why many health-insurance plans cover Viagra but not contraceptives, even his many years of interview experience seemed unable to lead him to an answer. The presumptive Republican nominee could not recall how he voted on the subject - a mystery soon solved by his questioner: He voted against it.

Life's Whys

The Trailblazer Times, MidAmerica Nazarene University, KS

Why? From the earliest stages of childhood, this question seems to be top on the minds of most human beings. I remember all the "why" questions that stampeded through my head as a kid. Why is the sky blue and the grass green? Why does it get hot in the summer and cold in the winter? Why are my eyes brown?

As I get older, "why" is attached to much harder topics.

King's latest antics reflect immaturity, not Iowans

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

2 days ago by DI Editorial Board

Iowans, it must be said, enjoy much the same nationwide reputation as their neighbors to the north: nice people. How jarring, then, to witness one of our own behaving like a witless boor while disrupting, arguably, one of the most important congressional hearings in recent history.

Art Museum needs to move downtown

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

4 days ago by DI Editorial Board

With the UI Museum of Art having faced so much destruction in the flood, the best move it can make is to move.

Relocating the museum would ensure that it comes back even better than the wonderful place it has been. The new museum would be refined and revamped. It would stand as our triumph in the face of the flood. Hopefully, lengthy discussions and evaluations can be avoided - because the community, the Arts School, and the UI need the museum back.

FBI should not use racial profiling

Daily Egyptian, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL

5 days ago by Andrea Lewis

If the Bush Justice Department gets its way, the FBI may soon be going after American citizens on the basis of our race, religion and ethnicity-even when there is no evidence of wrongdoing. Federal law enforcement officials recently revealed proposed changes to the so-called attorney general guidelines that would allow authorities to initiate investigations of suspects by matching their personal traits to a terrorist profile.

The disintegration of humanity: Beauty pageants: brains vs. bodies

Western Courier, Western Illinois University, IL

6 days ago by Sarah Zeeck

When was the talent portion of the Miss Universe and most other pageants worldwide eliminated? What do we judge on now? Legs, waists and breasts. Well, and, of course, a pretty face.

Personality and intelligence have grown unimportant, and we are left with hour-long TV programs parading young women across a stage, flaunting their "beauty.

Drilling for answers won't provide solution

The Alestle, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, IL

6 days ago by Jeff Mason

Earlier this week President Bush lifted the executive ban on offshore drilling, a ban put on by his father back in 1990. The move came as a way for the president to bring the issue to the forefront and pressure the House and Senate into making a decision.

You have to applaud our president: he's not just sitting on his hands and being a lame duck.

Theme parks can only do so much

The Alestle, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, IL

Several weeks ago, a 17-year-old boy was struck by a roller coaster and killed at the Six Flags theme park in Atlanta. The teenager scaled two 6-foot high fences in a restricted area and passed several warning signs while trying to retrieve a hat he had lost on the Batman ride.
