SIU had its budget bolstered after Gov. Rod Blagojevich approved the largest operating increase for state universities in seven years. The university will receive a total increase of about $9 million from the total $37 million increase being allocated to public universities for operational costs.

A recently expelled student pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of failure to avoid an accident and driving under the influence. Scott Toomsen, a 38-year-old Carbondale resident, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving under the influence after a June 19 incident in which he struck the back of an administrator's car.

Daniel Song'ony, professor of economics at MidAmerica Nazarene University, was found dead in his home Wednesday, July 16.
According to MNU President Ed Robinson, Song'ony was taken to Kansas University Medical Center for autopsy, and the coroner determined the cause of death was a heart attack.

The residents of a 500-side Cougar Village apartment continue to face criminal problems, following a string of crimes including burglary, theft and multiple cases of criminal damage to property.
SIUE Police Lt. Kevin Schmoll said because of the extensive list of problems at the apartment, police recommended the residents move into different apartments.

A month ago, the courageous acts of a local police officer were rewarded. Officer James Rowland of the Macomb Police Department received the Life Saving Medal award June 6 for saving an attempted suicide victim.
Rowland was one of the officers responding to a suicide complaint on March 18 when a suicidal woman shot herself in the chest.
